Our experience

Now if money is no object in your quest for the best sleep (you go you!) then this section is for you.

Sleep Republic offer a hybrid design that starts off with a luxurious cashmere knitted cover encasing an upper layer of gel-infused memory foam (with a density of 60kg/m3!), a layer of natural dunlop latex, and a whopping 1850 tensile steel springs in their queen mattress split across 5 zones – almost double than the 1000 springs we’d be looking for in a queen innerspring mattress! Even their king single bed has 1250 coils, while the super king sized mattress has a mind-blowing 2500. You want a high spring count, as this means your weight is distributed across more springs, meaning each individual spring bears less weight. Ultimately, this means stronger support and higher durability.

Cashmere is a natural, biodegradable fibre that is all at once strong, silky, soft and warm, all properties that are really great for a cosy bed. Sleep Republic has blended it with 60% polyester which gives it elasticity and durability.

The first layer in the Sleep Republic mattress is a gel infused memory foam layer 3cm thick. The cooling gel is designed to help regulate your body temperature as you sleep, and the memory foam will contour to your body to provide pressure relief as your weight is distributed evenly from head to toe.

Sleep Republic’s 3cm layer of premium latex foam has thousands of ventilation holes while their high density memory foam is infused with gel particles to keep you cool. Each layer of this pocket spring mattress works to disperse body heat, and you’ll find it strikes a balance between comfort and support.

Sleep Republic have taken individual components and created something much greater than the sum of its parts. The level of comfort you’d feel as soon as you lie down on this bed is unparalleled. The Sleep Republic bed is a medium to firm mattress. It should be right for most stomach sleepers and back sleepers, while some side sleepers may find this to be a tad too firm for their liking. Regardless of the type of sleeper you are, this bed is definitely worth a try. For a more in depth look into this winner among the box brands, check out this article, then try it for yourself with their 100 night trial period. And you can sleep easy knowing that your bed has a 12 year warranty.

Emma Comfort Mattress - Runner Up to best mattress overall

Click for Best Price
What we like
  • Bouncy and responsive memory foam
  • OEKO-Tex Certified Materials
  • Free and fast delivery in metro areas
Considerations
  • Some may find this firmer than expected.
  • Edge support could be better, but good for a foam mattress.

Our experience

After careful consideration, we have selected the Emma Comfort as the second-place winner in the “Best Overall Mattress” category. This mattress is made entirely of foam but provides a level of support usually associated with innerspring mattresses. It consists of two layers of polyfoam: the first layer, Emma’s proprietary Airgocell, and the core high resiliency extra (HRX) polyfoam.

The first layer, Airgocell, conforms to your body shape, alleviating pressure points that usually sink too deeply into the mattress. As a result, it helps maintain body balance and ensures proper spinal alignment. Emma describes this quality as “point elastic” since the foam exhibits elasticity and only yields to the specific areas where pressure is applied. Unlike traditional memory foam mattresses, this responsive foam quickly returns to its original shape, ensuring you won’t feel trapped or restricted when changing positions during sleep. Another fantastic feature of this foam is that it’s 50% air, making it a breathable, open pore foam that allows for good air circulation and moisture regulation.

The core of the Emma Comfort is made up of 18cm of high resiliency extra (HRX) polyfoam. Emma Sleep has designed this layer with 7 zones of varying depths to offer targeted support to different parts of your body. Whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach, the mattress adapts to your body contours, ensuring a comfortable fit for each individual sleeper. Additionally, like the Airgocell this foam also has an open-pore structure, for breathability and preventing the bed from trapping excessive body heat, keeping you cool throughout the night.

Encasing these two foam layers is Emma’s Fresh Air Comfort cover, featuring an elastane polyester top that the company refers to as “climate control fiber.” This machine washable cover efficiently wicks away moisture, preventing a sticky feeling during sleep. It is highly breathable, similar to materials used in sportswear, further enhancing the bed’s ability to dissipate body heat and provide a cooler sleeping experience. The elastane (spandex) component also ensures the cover’s durability and longevity, as it remains resilient even with extended use.

The Emma Comfort offers the advantages of a memory foam mattress, such as motion isolation, mattress contouring, and pressure relief, while still providing a responsive and bouncy feel. With its competitive pricing and a complimentary 100-night trial period, it’s certainly a mattress worth trying out.

Origin Hybrid Mattress - Best Affordable Mattress

Considerations

  • Edge support could be better.

Our experience

The Origin Hybrid mattress, distinct from the Origin Hybrid Pro, is our top choice for “Best Affordable Mattress.” It is designed with input from orthopedic doctors, ensuring proper spinal alignment during sleep.

The first layer of comfort in this hybrid design is the 3cm HexaGrid Orthopedic layer. It molds to your body, providing support, pressure relief, and cooling. The hexagonal cell structure maintains firmness in the middle third to keep your back aligned. Some side sleepers may find it too firm, but back sleepers appreciate its balanced comfort and support. The HexaGrid contains cooling particles that aid in removing body heat. The key factor for effective cooling in this layer though is the way it regulates airflow through this layer. The pathways for airflow expand when your body is warm and contract when it’s cold, retaining heat close to your body.

Beneath this layer is natural Australian wool, known for its sustainability, softness, and motion isolation. It regulates temperature, keeping you comfortable in different weather conditions. Wool is also hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, mildew, and bacteria.

Next, there’s an eco-friendly bamboo-infused memory foam layer designed to be breathable and aid in temperature regulation. It also has hypoallergenic properties and minimizes motion transfer.

Finally, the core of the Origin Mattress is made up of Antigravity pocket springs made from durable tempered steel, providing responsive support to your back. Origin uses highly durable tear resistant fabric to protect each coil. Pocket springs give you ventilation throughout the mattress which helps keep you cool and prevents moisture and bacteria building. Not to mention, pocket springs isolate movement to the individual springs you put pressure on, so it basically eliminates partner disturbance!

The mattress cover is made of 100% Tencel, a sustainable and soft material with antimicrobial properties. It enhances air circulation, ensuring a cool night’s sleep. Tencel is biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and non-toxic in its production process.

Considering the quality materials used, including the Tencel cover, pocket springs, and natural wool layer, the Origin Hybrid Mattress offers exceptional value for its price point, which is why we’ve awarded it “Best Affordable Mattress”.

ErgoFlex 5G Mattress - Best Memory Foam Mattress (Non-Organic)

Our experience

There are a number of different types of foam used in mattresses, and they often get used in a combination of different ways. Find out more about the different types of foams here and here.

As far as the all-foam mattress goes, it’s hard to walk past the Ergoflex memory foam mattress.

Ergoflex pioneered the bed-in-a-box phenomenon in Australia, and have so many loyal customers who, over the years, have purchased different generations (versions) of their beds and loved each one! Ergoflex is truly a memory foam mattress and uses true viscoelastic foam which is temperature sensitive, and is jampacked with spherical cells. This comfortable mattress will conform perfectly to your body shape, and it’s fantastic for pressure relief. It’s soft, but still supports your body weight, and it has excellent motion isolation. Though they have not revealed their foam density, it’s likely at least around 80kg/m3 – definitely a high-density foam. Comparatively, most foam mattresses probably have a density closer to 30kg/m3.

The Ergoflex memory foam mattress might not be ideal for hot sleepers as by its very nature, a memory foam mattress cannot have the same level of airflow as an innerspring mattress. They’ve tried to regulate your body temperature with the egg-shell shaped Cool-sleep Airflow System layer, but the heat retention might still be too much if you’re a hot sleeper. The base layer of high resilience foam acts to support the layers of memory foam comfort layers. Side sleepers might also find the Ergoflex to be a bit too firm, especially if you’re fairly light.

The bed is anti-bacterial, naturally anti-allergenic and anti-dust mite, in addition to being certified by CertiPur-US and OKEO-TEX, so we know that independent parties have verified that there are very low levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and absolutely no chemicals such as formaldehyde. And it features a machine washable cover made out of Tencel for added hygiene.

A queen sized Ergoflex mattress comes in at $1649, which is much pricier than queen sized mattresses of other foam mattresses (and indeed, even many hybrid mattresses). This price reflects the extremely dense foam; the 9cm thick layer of premium memory foam (compared to the usual 3cm or 5cm memory foam layers).

Another thing to note is that the Ergoflex memory foam mattress will definitely take some time to get used to if you have slept on traditional mattresses all your life. Their 30 day trial period is much shorter than the 100 night free trials that many other box brands offer, but it’s worth taking advantage of. Ergoflex offers a 10-year warranty on their mattresses.

Koala Mattress - Best Value Memory Foam Mattress (Non-Organic)

What we like
  • You can choose the firmness and customise it yourself
  • CertiPUR-US certified foam
  • Generous 120 day trail period. Great customer service.
Considerations
  • They were previously 100% Australian made, now they're not.
  • Slightly more setup as it comes in two boxes (one for each layer)

Our experience

Now the New Koala Mattress may not be an organic mattress by any means, but that doesn’t mean it has sacrificed quality or safety of materials. The Koala bed is both GECA and CertiPur-US approved, so you know you aren’t sleeping on a bed of formaldehyde or other harmful chemicals. GECA approval also means that Koala’s materials meet the highest social, ethical and environmental standards at every point throughout the production and selling process. So it’s a win for society, a win for the environment – and a very comfortable win for you. With a queen sized Koala coming in at $1099, the Koala is an affordable option that comes with peace of mind.

The new koala mattress has a cover that is made of 35% Tencel Lyocell blended with 65% polyester. It conveniently unzips, allowing you to adjust the mattress firmness. Koala have made this cover layer a whopping 7cm thick for extra cushioning. Over time, this may lead to sagging, but it’s so comfortable. I love Tencel. It’s sustainable and great for the environment, all while feeling so soft, breathable and comfortable. Polyester on the other hand is pretty terrible for the environment, but it’s easy to see why they’ve gone with a polyester Tencel blend. Blending the two takes the best of both. Tencel polyester blends are elastic and extremely durable, soft, and breathable. It doesn’t absorb liquid readily and when it does, it dries off faster.

Under this Tencel cover is a double sided comfort layer that gives you adjustable firmness levels, followed by a firmer base layer of polyfoam which has three zones to support spinal alignment as you sleep through the night. The Koala is delivered in two boxes for the two different foam layers, and you can use Koala’s zipper and magnetic clasp to attach them together. Koala’s proprietary foam layers mean there is minimal partner disturbance.

The Koala mattress comes with a 10-year warranty and if you live in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth, you can enjoy free same-day delivery. So what are you waiting? There’s a 120 night free trial period, so try it for yourself today!

Eva Comfort Classic Mattress - Best Value for Money Hybrid Mattress

What we like
  • Decent quality materials used
  • Very responsive customer service
  • 100 night trial with next day delivery
Considerations
  • Average edge support
  • A 3cm visible sag is required to be eligible for warranty

Our experience

If you’re looking for an affordable hybrid design, Eva’s hybrid mattress might be your bed. At $1050, the Eva mattress with gel memory foam on top of latex foam, over pocket springs which have different coil gauges across 5 zones. The 4cm layer of gel-infused memory foam gives supportive sleep and pressure relief to your joints. The gel aims to keep the sleeper at the perfect temperature as foams tend to retain heat. Eva also uses 2cm of Dunlop latex which is naturally dust mite resistant and antimicrobial, and they have produced it with an open cell structure to be softer and to allow airflow. Pocket springs when done right provide a solid foundation for the entire mattress, eliminate partner disturbance, and enable airflow for cooler sleep. Eva uses a coil gauge of 1.8mm and 1.9mm throughout each of their five zone pocket springs, and the different zones help keep your spine aligned.

Its 5-zone pocket spring system along with the gel memory foam and latex foam with an open-cell structure will minimise transfer of movement, so you can enjoy having minimal partner disturbance. It has decent edge support with 2.2mm coils around its perimeter.

The Eva is CertiPUR-US certified so you know there aren’t any harmful substances for you to breathe in. It’s suitable for all body types, side, back, stomach or combination sleepers, and is a fantastic all-rounder bed. They have a 100 night trial period and offer a 12-year warranty on their mattresses. More importantly than trial periods and warranties though, the quality of the Eva mattress is well worth it at this price point!

But wait… what about Noa Mattress?

It was honestly tough for me to decide between Eva and Noa for the best value for money category. Both Eva and Noa are mid-range beds – the Eva costs $1050 for a queen, while a Noa is just slightly more expensive at $1199.

The Noa mattress is a hybrid design consisting of a euro style pillow top layer of Tencel, followed by Dunlop latex, a layer of gel infused memory foam, transition foam, then lastly pocket springs, all wrapped in a high-end cover. Noa’s use of open-cell structured dunlop latex foam makes it less dense, so it’s be softer, bouncier, and more comfortable. The open-cell structure will also help with heat retention, as there will be more airflow. This is followed by their 4cm thick layer of gel memory foam. It has a long 15 year manufacturer’s warranty period and has both OEKO-Tex standard 100 and REACH certification, meaning there aren’t any dangerous metals or chemicals.

While Noa and Eva both make an excellent gel memory foam mattress, I did prefer the Eva as it’s a slightly firmer mattress, has a higher coil count, and also has stronger edge support (2.2mm gauged coils around its perimeter compared to Noa’s high-density foam perimeter). However, for those who don’t want a firmer mattress, make sure you take advantage of Noa’s 100 night free trial as it is an excellent choice and gives you bang for your buck!

Peace Lily and Quokka Beds - Best Organic Mattress (Tied)

Read our full Peacelily review

Our experience

There are a number of things to be aware of when choosing between mattresses, and you will choose differently based on your priorities. If you value organic materials only being used in your box bed, you will need to purchase dunlop latex foam mattresses. In Australia, Quokka Beds and Peacelily offer 100% natural latex mattresses.

Quokka Beds offers more customisation and choice in terms of mattress firmness, however Peacelily is better value for money. Both offer a 100 night trial period and have extremely long warranty periods, at 20 and 25 year warranties respectively, double the common 10 year warranty period, which reflects the durability of dunlop latex.

At around $1600-$2200 for a queen mattress, dunlop latex tends to be more expensive compared to other beds in boxes, but they are an organic option that has minimal environmental impact. Talalay latex foam is usually cheaper, but is less durable and almost always at least partially synthetic latex, so if this is something you are actively avoiding, look specifically for 100% dunlop latex beds.

ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This article would not be complete without mentioning the Sleeping Duck. Sleeping Duck is a giant within the mattress industry, and no wonder. No other box brand offers so much customisation. Sleeping Duck’s washable cover encases three layers – a layer of polyfoam which Sleeping Duck have engineered to feel like memory foam, their unique adjustable firmness system, and for the base, twice tempered steel pocketed coils. This bamboo fabric cover can be unzipped for you to change virtually every aspect of your sleeping experience.

If you have a partner who needs a completely different level of firmness to you, or if you want a bed that will change with you as life happens (pregnant mummas, I feel your pain!), then the Sleeping Duck mattress could be the bed you’re looking for. Sleeping Duck’s adjustable firmness means that if you want a firmer zone under your shoulders and hips while leaving the rest softer, and your wife just wants to sleep on a rock, then both of you can be happy.

The Sleeping Duck truly lets you make your bed your own. With a 100 night free trial and 10 year warranty period, you can test out the quality materials for yourself!
