Who are Chiropedic and where is the Eco Kids Mattress made?

The founder of this second-generation Australian mattress company was asked by his wife to create their son’s first mattress. She wanted an eco-friendly, natural, and chemical-free mattress that was comfortable and supportive for their growing child.

He discovered that existing kids’ mattresses were just smaller versions of adult beds, usually made from synthetic materials with no health or eco certifications. After two years of research and development, and with help from his retired father to source natural materials, the Eco Kids mattress was created.

The Eco Kids mattress, designed by experts with over 60 years of experience, is handmade in Melbourne using premium natural materials and the latest eco-friendly technologies. It provides proper spinal alignment for growing bodies, is free of harmful chemicals, and is backed by a 10-year warranty.

What is the Eco Kids Mattress made out of? Are there detailed specifications for this mattress?

The Eco Kids Mattress is 21 cm high, making it suitable for bunk beds and floor beds. A single sized mattress is 20kg, and 23kg with the pillowtop. It is designed for all children, from happy toddlers through to teenagers and young adults, supporting up to 120 kg and a combined body weight of 150 kg for short periods of time when a parent is present.

This natural choice is non-toxic, eco-friendly, and 100% vegan, free from harmful glues and chemicals. The layers of foam are certified by Global GreenTag and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for high environmental and safety standards. As Chiropedic refuse to use non-toxic chemicals in the Eco Kids Mattress, it does not contain fire retardant chemicals.

Endorsed by the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, this excellent kids mattress is available in four sizes: double, king single, long single, and the single mattress.

Top Cover

The Eco Kids Mattress boasts a top cover crafted from natural surface materials—bamboo and cotton fibres—creating a breathable and hypoallergenic sleeping surface that is perfect for children.

For an extra $200, it can be ordered with an optional 5 cm pillow top layer of certified dunlop foam, adding softness and comfort. This option is particularly suitable for grown adults who co-sleep with their children or for tweens and teenagers seeking extra comfort. The pillow top offers a foamy, responsive feel that absorbs body weight effectively.

The natural bamboo fabric is soft, durable, and has natural anti-microbial properties, keeping the mattress fresh and healthy. Both the bamboo and cotton fabric are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, ensuring they are free from harmful chemicals and safe for skin contact.

The Eco Kids Mattress uses GECA and Global GreenTag certified foam, indicating it meets high environmental standards. It is also 100% vegan, with no animal products used in its materials or manufacturing process.

Layer 1 – Cotton fibre quilting

Underneath the bamboo fabric is a quilted comfort layer of 100% natural cotton fibre, certified by Cotton Australia. This layer will give your child natural softness, offering anti-allergy benefits and serving as a natural insulator for maximum breathability.

Layers 2 and 3 – Dunlop Foams

Next are two comfort layers of foam, certified by GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia), an independent organization that evaluates products for their toxicity and environmental impact. These are polyfoams from the foam manufacturing company Dunlop. It’s important not to confuse them with dunlop latex foam.

The Dunlop foams layers have different densities and work together to provide your child with both comfort and support. Both comfort layers are are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and are approved by the National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice program, which independently assesses products for their suitability for allergy sufferers and kids with asthma.

Layer 4 – HygroFlex Foam

The Hygroflex foam layer used in the Eco Kids Mattress is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, guaranteeing it is free from harmful chemicals and safe for skin contact. Additionally, this resilient layer is certified by Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA), meeting stringent environmental standards.

Hygroflex foam is a proprietary formulation by Chiropedic, created using the eco-friendly Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF) technology developed in Australia. Research conducted by RMIT University in Melbourne indicates that Hygroflex foam more effectively redistributes pressure, quickly diffuses body heat, and reduces friction compared to traditional memory foam. This high-density Dunlop foam layer is durable and provides the necessary support for rapidly growing children. It is also approved by the National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice program, making it an ideal option for children with asthma or allergies.

Layer 5 – Chiro Flex ES Spring System

The top comfort layers of the Eco Kids Mattress rest on a specially designed “Chiro Flex ES” spring system, which is 60% stronger than those found in standard children’s mattresses. This system includes impressive features, such as a reinforced perimeter for enhanced edge support.

Made from refined, triple heat-treated wire, the Chiro Flex ES spring system features a higher coil count  (220 springs in a single) and superior strength compared to the Bonnell springs commonly used in kids’ mattresses. It offers balanced support for children of all sizes and weights, promoting natural and healthy physical development.

What is the firmness of the Eco Kids Mattress?

The Eco Kids mattress offers a medium-firm feel, which is optimal for growing children, supporting front, back, and side sleepers. It can be ordered with or without a soft pillow top layer which would give it a softer feel, while maintaining the spinal alignment children need.

Some people say it’s too firm, so if your child is used to a more plush surface, we would recommend using the pillow top for softer, plush comfort.

How strong is the edge support?

The Eco Kids Mattress uses their Chiro Flex ES springs with Maxi-Boost edge support to give you child full use of the bed’s surface area. Kids often play on their beds, and parents often sit on the edge of their children’s’ beds as they read bedtime stories. The Maxi-Boost gives 70% more support and is strong enough to hold an adult’s weight. This design prevents the mattress edges from sagging, ensuring your child won’t easily roll out of bed.

Does the Eco Kids Mattress sag? Is it a durable mattress?

The Eco Kids mattress is built to accommodate your child’s growth over the years. Though it’s not engineered to withstand rigorous jumping, the manufacturers have anticipated that some bouncing is inevitable and have designed it with this in mind. Chiropedic are confident in the longevity of the Eco Kids mattress and back it with a 10 year warranty policy.
