Macoda Mattress

Our Verdict
It's a very supportive bed, particularly for those who are looking for a soft bed.
What we like
  • Adjustable firmness levels
  • Dunlop latex foam
  • For those of you who prefer a softer feel, the Macoda could be for you
  • The mattress cover is removable, but not machine washable.
  • It really is quite a soft bed, and the firmer of the two options is not drastically firmer.

Who is Macoda?

Macoda began in 2018, started by two Australians. The Macoda mattress was designed in 2017 and has won awards and fans throughout Australia. It’s a comfortable hybrid mattress that allows you to choose and rearrange the firmness of your bed by simply opening up the cover and rearranging some layers. Let’s dive in!

Where are their mattresses made?

The Macoda mattress is designed in Australia, but like the vast majority of other mattresses, is made in China. While we wish that the whole process could be done in Australia from beginning to end for transparency, quality control, and environmental reasons, it is definitely easy to see why it’s much more economically viable to offshore the manufacturing process.

Ultimately, as long as Macoda has measures in place to ensure quality, this shouldn’t be a dealbreaker. For an objective standard of quality, we rely on certification from independent assessors. Macoda’s polyfoam and memory foam layers are CertiPUR-US certified, and their bamboo covers and latex foam have Okeo-Tex’s seal of approval.

What is the Macoda mattress made out of? Are there detailed specifications for this mattress?

The Macoda bed is a hybrid mattress with an innerspring core (with 5 zones to support you from head to toe!), topped with a layer each of latex foam, cooling gel memory foam, and high density polyfoam. All this is bundled up into a minimalist, stylish and conveniently unzippable bamboo cover. Macoda offers customisable firmness – just open up the cover to flip and rearrange layers to find your comfort configuration!

Removable Bamboo Cover

Macoda’s cover is made of bamboo rayon quilting, with a thin layer of foam. You can unzip it to access the layers inside, but unfortunately the cover is not machine washable. We would strongly recommend you use a mattress protector and sheets, and spot clean any stains.

Bamboo is a sustainable resource in that it grows very quickly, so in that sense it is extremely environmentally friendly. Unfortunately, its recent popularity has meant it faces over-harvesting. Also, the process of turning bamboo into fabric can involve some pretty nasty chemicals, so it is not the most eco-friendly option. That said, bamboo is an antibacterial material, so if you are plagued by allergies, this is a relief for you. It’s a very breathable, silky, soft, luxurious feeling fabric, and when you lie down on it, you will feel absolutely spoiled.

Layer 1 – Premium Latex Foam

This layer is 3cm of natural dunlop latex which is OEKO-Tex certified. Dunlop latex is dense, supportive and durable, as well as being hypoallergenic. It repels dust mites, bed bugs, and will let you sleep tight. It’ll conform to your body and relieve your pressure points. It’s strong, it’s supportive, basically everything I want in a man.

On the other hand, it’s not as soft and bouncy as talalay latex, and does retain more heat. To counter this, the latex foam is punctured with holes to allow air flow and for the heat to escape out of. This along with the other layers will work to keep you from feeling overheated.

The mattress will come to you with this layer on the top, setting the bed at a medium soft feel.

Layer 2 – Gel Infused Memory Foam

Imagine falling into a cloud. Now you know what it feels like to fall into this 5cm thick layer of gel infused memory foam.

I joke, but memory foam is an absolute delight to sink into. There’s nothing quite like it. Memory foam contours to your body and relieves your pressure points, and your weight is evenly distributed from head to toe, even more so than the latex foam layer. It can make you feel stuck in it though, so the latex layer will help you move out of your “rut”.

The gel infusion is designed to help regulate your body temperature as you sleep by drawing your body heat away. At first it does feel cooler. However as the night wears on, the gel particles will eventually become the same temperature as the rest of the foam and won’t keep you cooler. Also, the gel infusion will be most cooling if you make this your uppermost layer (in which case the bed will be at its softest configuration). If you need to switch things around to a medium soft or firm feel, then the gel will be less effective.

Layer 3 – High Density Support Foam

Macoda’s high density support foam layer is 3cm thick. And when they say “high density”, they mean high density. All their foam layers have densities between 50-70kg/m3 which makes for a strong, durable bed that supports your body – and they still manage to make these foam layers oh so soft.

Both this layer and the gel infused memory foams are CertiPur-US certified, which gives me peace of mind in terms of their low VOCs and the absence of any toxic metals and chemicals such as mercury, lead, and formaldehyde.

This polyfoam layer is firmer than the latex and gel memory foams, so if you want your bed to be at its firmest, put this layer up top.

Layer 4 – 5 Zone Pocket Spring Foundation

The magic of pocket springs is that there is no motion transfer. When your partner gets up to soothe the baby, you can continue to sleep like a baby should.

To add to that, Macoda targets the various needs of your body by using different springs in different areas. Your hips and shoulders need more support than your feet do throughout the night, and they’ll need to be able to sink deeper in the mattress if the bed is to keep your spine aligned. The coil gauges start at 1.8mm and go up to 2.3mm around the edges, which is great for pocket spring beds.

The one thing I do want to note is the number of coils – 768 in Macoda’s queen to be exact. Ordinarily we would be wanting between 800-1000 for a queen sized bed, and Macoda falls just short. The rest of the bed, foams springs and all, is fantastic though, so this is just a tiny blip that ultimately, probably won’t make much difference.

Macoda Mattress Dimensions and Weight

Macoda’s queen bed measures 152x203x29cm and weighs 50KG, making it a very solid bed.

How strong is the edge support?

With 2.3mm thick coils around the perimeter of the bed, you can sleep fearlessly to the very edge of the bed. Go on, sleep where no one has slept before!

Will I feel my partner tossing and turning?

While you do get a tiny bit of motion transfer through the latex and polyfoam layers, the memory foam and pocket springs will minimise this. Sleep easy, just as if you were sleeping alone.

What was the buying experience like?

Macoda wants to make sure that you know Macoda is the bed for you, so they offer a trial for you to try the mattress in your own home for 100 nights. If you want to return it during this period, you can, and at no cost!

You will need to make sure it’s not damaged or stained (which makes sense as it’ll be donated to the Salvation Army) so maybe use a mattress protector if you’re going to be drinking glasses of red wine in bed (who me? I would never…)

You do need to give it a fair go though, so Macoda asks that you use it for 28 nights first before requesting a return.

Purchasing Online

Macoda accepts debit and credit cards, Paypal, Google Pay, as well as Shop Pay. They also offer an interest free “Buy Now Pay Later” arrangement through Zip Pay and Afterpay.

Delivery of the mattress

Shipping is free across Australia. COVID and lockdown has made delivery very delayed, but in non pandemic times, you’d expect your bed to be delivered to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in 1-3 business days, 2-5 for Canberra and Perth, 5-10 days for Adelaide and non metro areas. Unfortunately for Northern Territorians, Tasmanians and remote areas (including some rural Australians), delivery times would have been more than a week.

In COVID times? It will be a markedly longer wait unfortunately.

Macoda Mattress in a Box Unboxing

50KG is a substantial weight to lift for most people. To help us over this hurdle, Macoda have fitted out their boxes with wheels. *insert happy dance*

Wheels really do make the world go round. What would we do without them?

Speaking of heavy. This doesn’t affect your sleep, but the mattress itself has handles. This is a gamechanger for moving houses and changing sheets. No more excuses for not changing your sheets once a week!

Customer Service

Email and Form

Each time I emailed Macoda or used their contact submission form on their website, they replied to me within the next couple of business days. Their answers were very helpful and open – there were no questions that were left unanswered. It’s reassuring to know that the Macoda staff are transparent and have nothing to hide!

Warranty – Anything to watch out for?

Macoda offers a 10 year warranty against faulty workmanship or materials.

What is covered

You can use the Macoda mattress on any “firm, flat surface”. You don’t even have to use a base if you’d rather just put it on the floor. Just make sure that if you’re using a frame with slats, that the gaps are at most 8cm wide. Macoda will cover any sagging or indentations deeper than 3.5cm when there is no weight on the bed, or if there are workmanship faults with broken or defective materials.

What is not covered

Wear and tear, odours, and minor imperfections that don’t affect how the bed works will not be covered under their warranty policy. Damage caused by incorrect opening, misuse or handling of the mattress will not be covered.

Warranty Process

To make a warranty claim, you’ll need to contact Macoda. To assess whether your claim comes within Macoda’s warranty policy, you will need to describe the problem as well as provide photographs. Based on that information, they will decide whether to assess further in order to find how the defect came about, and therefore whether it is a valid warranty claim.

Returns – How are the beds disposed?

Returned beds are collected and then either recycled or donated to charity. Macoda have partnered with the Salvation Army, so even if you ultimately return the bed, you’ll know that it’s going to be put to good use!

Macoda is an excellent bed. Personally, I find it a bit soft, but one cannot argue against the excellence of the bed. While it’s not as expensive as other brands, the quality is comparable. So go on, what are you waiting for? With the 100 night trial, you have nothing to lose!
