Origin Hybrid Mattress Review

Origin claim their Hybrid Mattress is the best for back support at an incredible price. But is it truly good sleep value for your money?
Last Updated Jul 2024
Origin started in Germany in 2018, and they're now big players in 8 countries and 3 continents. One of those countries is Australia, so I'll be looking specifically at the stylish Origin Hybrid Mattress today. Later down the road I'll do a mattress review for the Origin Hybrid Pro as well.

Origin's mission is "To help Australian wildlife and habitat thrive. One mattress at a time". They use sustainable materials, plant one tree for each mattress sold, and their profits help WWF Australia. Origin claim that each mattress absorbs a ton of carbon dioxide. They also say that controlled sleep trials show 18% faster sleep onset, 25% more deep sleep, and 30% fewer wakeups. All of this at a price that's almost too good to be true. Big claims, small price tag - is it truly good sleep value for your money?

Who are Origin, and where are their mattresses made?

The Origin Hybrid mattress is made in Malaysia. Developed by a German team with help from medical experts, it is designed to provide superior back support and comfort. These medical experts include orthopedic doctors, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and sleep experts.

What is the Origin Mattress made out of? Are there detailed specifications for this mattress?

The Origin Mattress is designed specifically with the advice of orthopedic doctors (these guys specialise in the musculoskeletal system) to ensure that healthy spinal alignment is maintained throughout the night. They offer a 120 night free trial period, so I’d suggest taking advantage of this risk free trial period to see how your back feels on this bed!

Origin’s mattress sizes all match standard Australian bed sizes, with the queen measuring 153×203×27cm and weighing 37KG and supporting sleepers with a combined body weight of up to 240kg.

The materials used in this bed has approval by CertiPUR-US and CeriOEKO-TEX, as well as the Certified Eco-friendly corporation. These certifications means the Origin mattress has very low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which have negative effects on your health. Having objective third party certification gives us peace of mind.

MARKETING TRANSLATION

Cover

Origin have chosen to use 100% Tencel in the high quality cover of this modern design, and I am loving it. Tencel is a sustainable material and great for the environment, all while feeling so soft and comfortable. It has antimicrobial and hypoallergenic properties and doesn’t pill. Tencel is extremely breathable which helps promote air circulation, keeping you cool all night long. For the environmentally and socially conscious, it’s biodegradable and the production process leaves very little harmful waste. The process is also non toxic for factory workers.

Most bed manufacturers who use Tencel in their mattress covers blend it with another material, such as polyester or elastane. But Tencel is so good for you and so good for the environment, it’s no wonder Origin went with 100% natural Tencel!

Layer 1 – HexaGrid Orthopedic Layer

The first comfort layer in this hybrid design is the 3cm HexaGrid Orthopedic layer. It conforms to your body shape to support you and provide optimal pressure relief, all while cooling you and regulating your body temperature.

The Hexagrid is a proprietary foam layer that is shaped into hexagonal cells. It’s built to be firmer in the middle third so that your back is kept aligned as you sleep. Some side sleepers have found this layer to be a bit too firm for their liking, but back sleepers find it the perfect balance of comfort and support.

This layer is also infused with cooling particles which helps to draw your body temperature away. If it’s a particularly hot night though, these particles will only go so far. What will truly help though, is the airflow through this layer as it will expand when your body is warm. When it’s cold though, it’ll contract to keep the heat close to your body.

This layer sets Origin mattresses apart from other mattress in a box brands. One thing I really wished Origin did however, was to specify what kind of foam the HexaGrid layer is made from. I think it’s quite safe to assume it’s a proprietary polyfoam, but it would be nice to have this confirmed. Unsurprisingly, the density of the foam was not disclosed.

Layer 2 – Australian Wool

All natural Australian wool is prized the world over. It’s renewable and sustainable, it’s soft, elastic, and resilient, and helps minimise motion transfer. You’ll love its moisture and temperature regulation as it’s a great insulator so that it can keep you comfortable in cold or hot weather, while also wicking away moisture. Wool is perfect for those who have many allergies or sensitive skin, as it’s dust mite resistant, mildrew resistant, and naturally anti-bacterial. Yes to an Australian wool layer, especially when the quality is so good!

Layer 3 – Natural Bamboo Foam

This eco-friendly bamboo infused memory foam sits above the springs. Memory foam mattresses often trap a lot of body heat by nature, but this layer is designed to be breathable and work with the other layers to help regulate your body temperature through the night. I am slightly skeptical of how helpful bamboo particles will be in keeping you cool, especially beneath three other layers. That said, bamboo is hypoallergenic, strong and durable, and prevents odours from sticking around! This layer will also stop motion transfer. When it’s this far below the sleep surface though, you won’t directly experience the iconic slow recovery of memory foam, so you won’t get trapped in one position.

Layer 4 – Antigravity Springs

In the core of the Origin Mattress are the Antigravity springs. These pocket springs made from tempered steel are strong and durable to give your back the responsive support it needs. They’re durable so your bed won’t sag, and will go the distance of at least the 15 years covered in Origin’s warranty policy. Origin use highly durable tear resistant fabric to protect each coil. Pocket springs also give you ventilation throughout the mattress which helps keep you cool and prevents moisture and bacteria building. Not to mention, pocket springs isolate movement to the individual springs you put pressure on, so it basically eliminates partner disturbance!

What is the firmness of the Origin Mattress?

The Origin mattress is a fairly firm mattress, hitting around 8 on the firmness scale. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers will love the support this mattress gives you. If you’re a side sleeper who likes a firm sleep surface, then this might still be the bed for you. However, if you know straight off the bat that you want a soft bed you can sink straight into, then this may not be the one for you. Origin made a comment on their website that adjustable firmness features in beds is just a marketing ploy, but I do have to disagree firmly (ha) on that statement. Different people have different preferences, and there are some (usually side sleepers) who feel it is too firm for them, or need to use a mattress topper to make the Origin mattress comfortable for them. Nevertheless you can sleep easy with Origin’s 120 night risk free free trial period.

How strong is the edge support?

Origin’s edge support isn’t the strongest, I have to say. It’s enough for you to sleep close to the edge, but you will slip off if you’re sitting right on the edge to put your socks on. This edge support cushions and protects the edges of the foam layers and springs along the perimeter to ensure durability of the mattress as a whole. It’s a blend of polyfoam and cotton which is CertiPur-US certified to be non-toxic.

Will I feel my partner tossing and turning?

A combination of the bamboo infused memory foam layer, wool layer, as well as the individually moving pocket springs minimises motion disturbance. There’s very little to no motion transfer. This means that when you go to the kitchen for a glass of water, you won’t come back to a cranky sleepy partner – unless you have squeaky floors. That’s something the Origin hybrid mattress won’t be able to help you with.

What was the buying experience like?

Purchasing Online

You can make your mattress purchase via credit card, or via Paypal or Afterpay.

Delivery of the mattress

Origin provides quick delivery with any purchase within Australia taking between 1 and 10 business days to arrive at your door – all at no cost.

Origin Mattress Unboxing

At 37kg for a queen sized bed, it’s not too heavy for an innerspring mattress. Regardless, you should still get an extra pair of hands to help you. There are handles on the sides of the bed to make it easier to maneuver. Take it out of the box, cut open the vacuum sealed plastic and allow it to puff up and retake its original shape.

Customer Service

Calling Origin Customer Service

There’s no phone number to call Origin on.

Live Chat

Apparently there is a support chat on their website, but it didn’t appear for me. So I used their Facebook Messenger chat instead, which honestly, was not the greatest experience. Answers came 2 hours apart, even when I asked a follow up question instantly upon receiving the first answer. And the conversation felt curt and stilted. I was directed to the FAQ page on Origin’s website, which didn’t answer the questions I had in the first place.

Email and Form

Unfortunately, my questions didn’t fare much better via email. While they were more polite, the answers I received didn’t seem to match the details on Origin’s website. All in all, a very confusing experience.

Warranty – Anything to watch out for?

Origin offers a 15-year warranty, so you know they’re confident in the quality and durability of their beds. To ensure your warranty remains valid, you need to use a bed base suitable for supporting the mattress weight and user weight; otherwise, your guarantee may be invalidated.

What is covered

Under their warranty policy, indentations of greater than 2.54 cm deep are covered if the appropriate bed frame is utilized that is capable of withstanding the bedding and user’s weight.

What is not covered

Origin will not accept responsibility for physical/structural damages caused by normal wear and tear, nor will they take into account slight manufacturing defects. As long as the bed is still able to provide the pressure relief it promises to, softening of foams is not covered under Origin’s warranty policy.

Warranty Process

To begin the warranty process, email enquiry@originmattress.com.au. They’ll need you to send them photos of the defects. Within three days of receiving your mattress, you should inspect it for any damage or defects and report to Origin if there are any problems. After these initial three days, you won’t be able to attribute damage to Origin.

Returns – How are the beds disposed?

Origin will pick up your mattress at no cost, and upon pick up will refund your money to you. Instead of ending up in the landfill, these beds are donated to the Salvation Army so they can be put to good use by those who need it. It’s a great way to ensure that the resources are used productively and appropriately.

Summary

At this price point, the Origin Hybrid Mattress is fantastic value for money. The quality materials from the Tencel cover to the pocket spring layer, and natural materials like the wool layer, is comparable to that of other beds even twice the retail price. That said, it’s not for everyone. Your sleeping position will make quite a difference in how comfortable you find the this bed. But who knows? With its 120-night trial period, it’s worth seeing if this is your perfect mattress!
