Peace Lily Latex Mattress Review

Nothing but natural goodness
Last Updated May 2024
Natural mattresses have gained popularity due to several potential benefits they offer. These mattresses are typically made from natural materials, organic where possible, such as organic cotton, organic wool, and natural latex. These mattresses give you peace of mind compared to conventional mattresses, as you'll know that your bed is free of harmful chemicals, allergen friendly, biodegradable and eco friendly.

If you're looking for a natural latex mattress, Peace Lily delivers the restful sleep of knowing that your mattress is good for you, and the planet. Their focus is to give great sleep by providing sustainable beds that are of the highest quality. Peace Lily offer a latex foam mattress as well as their hybrid pocket spring model. Today I'll be focusing on the Peace Lily Latex mattress.

Who are Peace Lily and where are their mattresses made?

Peace Lily is Australian owned, but their latex mattresses are made in Sri Lanka. This makes sense though, given that the rubber sap used in Peace Lily latex mattresses is processed right next to the rubber plantations from which they’re sourced. It’s made from 100% natural rubber sap, manually tapped (read, eco-friendly methods) from Sri Lanka’s world class rubber trees. Peace Lily choose to use sustainable processes in making their beds, such as steam powered by biomass boilers, and primarily using wood fuel straight from rubber plantations. Peace Lily have received FSC certification, guaranteeing the well-being of forests, the livelihoods of workers, and positive impacts on local communities.

The supply of organic latex is quite limited, making it challenging for suppliers to genuinely offer organic latex. There have been numerous instances of manufacturers exaggerating their organic latex content. Peace Lily’s manufacturer holds the GOLS certification (the certification of organic latex) and possesses the a very high quantity of organic latex. However, given the limited availability, Peace Lily do not claim to use organic latex, but rather natural latex. Peace Lily do use organic materials where possible though, such as in their organic cotton mattress covers.

Another thing that I really love about Peace Lily is socially aware. They support Sri Lankan communities by providing factory workers with fair wages so workers aren’t exploited or exposed to any harmful substances. It’s sad that in our world, this is laudable when it should be the standard, so I’ll sleep better tonight knowing that my bed has contributed in a small way to easing the lives of less privileged communities.

What is the Peace Lily mattress made out of? Are there detailed specifications for this mattress?

This is a three ingredient mattress. The sandwich I had for lunch today was more complicated than this.

Natural latex + organic cotton + natural latex glue = Peace Lily Latex Mattress

This is as simple and straightforward as healthy organic sleep gets.

The Dunlop rubber latex foam that makes up most of the natural mattress is sustainably sourced. Peace Lily mattresses have no harmful chemicals, and therefore, no off-gassing. Natural latex is free of allergens, has anti bacterial properties, and repels dust mites, mould, mildew and is generally fire resistant, so Peace Lily  has  not needed to treat it with any chemicals. They’ve been awarded certifications from Landesgewerbeanstalt Bayern (also known as LGA for less of a mouthful), SATRA Technology, the eco-INSTITUT in Germany, OEKO-TEX, as well as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

They have more certifications than that sandwich I mentioned earlier has ingredients.

Oh, and did I mention that Peace Lily is Australian owned?

The Queen sized Peace Lily latex mattress is 153cm by 203cm by 21cm, and weighs in at 51kg. Definitely get someone to help you move this unit around. The Peace Lily latex mattress is capable of accommodating a weight of up to 350 kilograms.

Organic Cotton Cover

Peace Lily’s mattress cover is made  using premium, certified organic cotton. Organic cotton of such high quality stands out for its luxurious softness and exceptional breathability. And of course, it’s just so comfortable to lie on. It’s great at maintaining a cool temperature while efficiently wicking away moisture, and Peace Lily’s cotton fabric has fulfilled the strict requirements for Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Certification, so you know that this cotton is free from pesticides or any other harmful chemicals. Peace Lily has strengthened this cover to increase durability by using an organic cotton tape edge to prevent tears.

Oh, and Peace Lily have also added reinforced handles to the sides of the bed, which is handy when you’re trying to move your mattress or flip it around! Remember to get another pair of helping hands as it’s a heavy mattress, handles or no.

The Peace Lily latex mattress cover is exclusively composed of 100% organic cotton fabric, and has a high-density weave (350gsm knit – talk about a high thread count!) for durability and that oh so luxurious sensation when you fall back into your bed.

Organic Cotton Wadding

Beneath the organic cotton fabric cover, is a layer of wadding, also made of 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. This wadding is quilted with the cotton fabric cover for a durable, luxuriously soft, plush, but still breathable mattress cover. The hybrid mattress features an identical cover, with the exception of its underside, which features GOTS certified organic cotton canvas fabric.

Medium Layer – 100% Natural Rubber Latex

The next three layers of latex, the bulk of the Peace Lily Mattress, are made of 100% natural rubber latex. The only difference between these three layers is the thickness of each layer and the densities. You can easily choose your preferred firmness level between medium and firm simply by flipping your mattress over. The three layers work together to adapt to your body shape for excellent pressure relief, while also giving your spine the support it needs all night, every night.

It’s hard to say enough good things about natural latex. It’s durable (hence why Peace Lily can offer an incredible 25 year warranty), doesn’t deform over time, has no synthetic substances, and lasts for ages without becoming breaking up into powder. Latex foam is resilient, firmer than other kinds of foams, and bounces back fast so that you won’t get stuck in one position all  night.

This sustainable material is also biodegradable, so from the harvesting of the rubber, to using biomass boilers to vulcanise and cure the natural latex foam, all the way to when you dispose of it decades later, the Peace Lily latex mattress is as environmentally friendly as it gets. Oh, and the water used throughout the crafting of the latex foam is recycled as well, which underscores Peace Lily’s commitment to carefully considering and minimising (if not eliminating) any potential environmental impact.

Peace Lily have chosen to use Dunlop latex foam rather than Talalay. While Talalay can provide a softer feel, it also requires the addition of synthetic chemicals as filler, so naturally (heh) Peace Lily have stuck with Dunlop latex foam.

This first layer of foam is 5cm of D65 density Dunlop latex. It’s a medium level of firmness, and should be on the top side if you’d like your bed to have a medium feel. For a firmer feel, flip the entire mattress so that this layer is on the bottom.

Core Layer – 100% Natural Rubber Latex

This is the same Dunlop latex foam, but with a D80 density to serve as the 10cm thick core layer of the mattress. This layer, like the other two layers of latex foam, uses an open cell structure and is perforated with small holes throughout to allow for air circulation.

If you are a very hot sleeper though, you may be better off looking at a hybrid innerspring mattress. I will be reviewing Peace Lily’s hybrid mattress in the future, so stay tuned!

Firm Layer – 100% Natural Rubber Latex

Again, this layer is the same incredible natural Dunlop latex foam with an open cell structure. It’s 5cm with a D75 density. If you want to adjust your bed to feel firmer, then flip the mattress so that this side is on top.

Natural Latex Glue

Normally I wouldn’t dedicate a whole section to the glue, but given that this makes up a third of the ingredients list of the Peace Lily latex mattress, I think it deserves it. This natural latex glue keeps the foam layers together. Peace Lily are so committed to using only natural ingredients that they have made a non toxic glue free of chemicals using the same natural rubber as used in the latex foams. This way you can be reassured that even details like what kind of glue Peace Lily uses has been carefully thought through to eliminate off gassing and harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

What is the firmness of the Peace Lily mattress?

The Peace Lily latex mattress is reversible so that you can adjust the firmness level. It comes with medium foam layer on top for a medium feel, but you can use the reinforced handles to help you flip it so that you’ll sleep on the firm layer of foam for a firm feel.

Latex foam is very responsive and springs back into its original shape immediately, much like a bouncy ball. It cushions your pressure points while support your spine to help keep it aligned all night long.

Some people may find that the medium setting is still too firm, in which case you may want to invest in Peace Lily’s plush topper. While it does cost more than $500, it offers 5cm of a more luxurious, plush iteration of the same top-notch all-natural latex foam.

How strong is the edge support?

The edge support on the Peace Lily latex mattress is pretty good, especially compared to other foam mattresses. You’ll be able to peacefully sleep right up to the edge of the bed on the Peace Lily mattress without fear of falling off.

Will I feel my partner tossing and turning?

I would not suggest doing the glass of red wine experiment on your Peace Lily mattress – that probably won’t end well. Latex foam can’t eliminate movement transfer the way other kinds of foam, namely memory foam, might be able to. That said, there is enough movement isolation to keep you both asleep through normal movements. Just don’t start jumping and expect your partner to slumber on.

Does the Peace Lily mattress sag? Is it a durable mattress?

The aforementioned Landesgewerbeanstalt Bayern (LGA) in Germany has evaluated the latex mattress for durability by applying a force of 150 kg to the latex mattress for 60,000 strokes to mimic typical domestic latex mattress usage. Not only did Peace Lily reach the minimum required 50/100, but they scored 99/100.

Aced it!

No wonder Peace Lily are so bold as to offer a 25 year warranty.

What was the buying experience like?

Purchasing Online

You can buy the Peace Lily Latex Mattress with your credit card, or using Paypal, Humm, Zip, or Afterpay.

Delivery of the mattress

Most places in Australia will be eligible for free shipping, but some regional or remote areas will attract additional delivery fees. Melbournians and Sydneysiders can enjoy their new bed in 2-3 business days, but  if you live in other capital cities, you’ll need to wait 2 to 6 business days (or up to 10 days in Perth or 12 days in Darwin).

After the order has been dispatched, you’ll be sent tracking details and given an estimated delivery timeframe.

Peace Lily Unboxing

The queen sized mattress comes in a box measuring 42cm by 42cm by 165cm, and have wheels and a handle to help make manoeuvring the mattress easier. Don’t rely on the handle to pull it up stairs though or you may find yourself in a precarious situation. Pull it out of the box and onto your bed frame, remove the recyclable plastic wrapping, and enjoy the satisfaction of watching your bed spring to its normal shape! There is a smell from the latex foam, but it is entirely safe and free of VOCs.

Warranty – Anything to watch out for?

Latex foam is known for its durability and resilience, and Peace Lily is justifiably proud of their quality natural latex foam. They’ll back the latex mattress for a whopping 25 years warranty period!

What is covered

Peace Lily will cover sagging or impressions that are greater than 2.5cm, as long as the bed was used correctly on a suitable bed frame. The impressions need to be visible when there is no weight on the bed, and you will need to show what bed frame you used when you make a warranty claim. Any defect in the natural latex foam that leads to splitting or cracking during regular use and appropriate handling will be included in the warranty.

Make sure you unbox your bed within 2 weeks of receiving it, otherwise the structure may be affected, voiding the warranty. For the first six months, it is suggested that you rotate it once a month, and after that, every two months to help the latex foam maintain its shape.

What is not covered

Peace Lily will not cover damage that is a consequence of accidents such as spills, or mould resulting from improper ventilation and excessive humidity. It is important to ensure that you use an appropriate bed frame to support the latex mattress, or else the warranty will be voided.

Comfort preferences also won’t be covered, along with minor imperfections and flaws if they do not affect the functioning of the mattress.

Warranty Process

You must submit full-length photos along with a brief description of the defect and its impact on the latex mattress as well as proof of purchase to info@peacelily.com.au. Peace Lily reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to request additional photographs, information, descriptions, or even send a representative or an independent inspector for a physical inspection before approving your claim. If approved Peace Lily will repair or replace the mattress within 30 days and pay for associated shipping costs.

Returns – How are the beds disposed?

If you wish to return the bed during the 100 night trial, either email info@peacelily.com.au and follow their instructions. The mattress will need to be in good condition with no stains or tears to be eligible for a refund. It will be picked up by a charity organisation in most metro areas of Australia, but outside of these you will need to contact local churches or shelters to see if they will accept it. Refunds will be paid only after it has been accepted by a charity, in keeping with Peace Lily’s aim to be as sustainable as possible.

Summary

Peace Lily offers peace of mind with their focus on using only natural materials, organic where possible. Given that you’re sleeping on this latex mattress for 8 hours a night for 25 years, it makes sense to prioritise your health by choosing a bed that has no synthetic materials or VOCs for you to breathe in. It’s also a sustainable bed, in that it’s a biodegradable bed with an extremely long life expectancy, and also in regards to the materials and methods being environmentally sustainable. You have the option to choose between medium and firm simply by flipping the bed around – I personally preferred the firm setting as I do like a firmer surface. I love what Peace Lily stand for, and I feel like I’ve made the world a better place just by sleeping on it.
